The Church of St. Mary of Valverde is located in Piazza Cavalieri di Malta and is an example of Baroque art. Existing since the fourteenth century, it was extended in 1633 by Mariano Emery.

It stands in the square, in the same area where there was a fifteenth century church and, before that, a previous fourteenth-century building, which was the first building built by the Dominicans after their arrival in Palermo in 1217. The Church of San Domenico was built in 1640 to a design by Andrea Cirrincione, a Dominican.
